Bethlehem Arab Women Union: Empowering Women, Preserving Heritage, Serving Community
Since 1947, the Bethlehem Arab Women Union (BAWU) has been a driving force in empowering Palestinian women, preserving cultural heritage, and supporting vulnerable communities in Bethlehem. Founded in the wake of the 1948 Nakba, BAWU has grown into a pillar of resilience and service, led entirely by women.
Key Initiatives:
Economic Empowerment: Through its Embroidery and Sewing Center (est. 1969) and Traditional Food Project (est. 1987), BAWU provides employment and training while preserving traditional crafts and cuisine.
Cultural Preservation: BAWU established the Baytna al-Talhami Folklore Museum and the Bethlehem History Museum to celebrate and safeguard Palestinian heritage.
Community Support: The Union distributes aid, hosts educational and wellness programs, and organizes cultural events for children, families, and the elderly—especially during Ramadan and Christmas.
In recent years, BAWU has embraced sustainability with a solar energy project and expanded partnerships globally. Under the leadership of Mrs. Diana Elias, the Union continues to inspire unity, dignity, and hope.
BAWU is not just an organization — it’s a legacy of leadership, culture, and compassion.
